Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure
Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure, or LANAP, is the first and only FDA approved laser protocol to treat periodontitis. It works by use of an Nd:YAG laser that is only available to those practitioners who attend specialized hands on training prior to use in private practice. Since this therapy is minimally invasive, no sutures will be placed, and typically patients have less post operative complications. LANAP targets bacteria and diseased tissue only, so the surgical wound is limited to a smaller treatment area. No healthy tissue is removed, and there is less recession following LANAP. Lastly, the laser uses the body’s own biology to seal the surgical sites with a clot. When maintained appropriately, this clot leads to the healing of the hard and soft tissues, thus controlling periodontal disease. Below you will find the steps of LANAP, along with an animation video.
REGENERATION MATERIALS
Guided Tissue Bone Regeneration "regenerates" the previously lost gum and bone tissue. Most techniques utilize membranes, which are inserted over the bone defects. Some of these membranes are bio-absorbable and some require removal.
Other regenerative procedures involve the use of bioactive gels which stimulate the body to regenerate your lost bone and gaining back the support that has been lost.
GROWTH FACTORS:
Emdogain Gel - Is comprised of various Enamel Matrix Protein that work by mimicking the biological processes of natural tooth development. It induces regeneration by mediating formation of cementum on the root of the tooth, providing a foundation for all necessary tissues associated with a true functional attachment.
Gem 21s - Growth-factor Enhanced Matrix Is a completely synthetic grafting system engineered to stimulate wound healing and bone regeneration by triggering a cascade of molecular events when implanted into the body that continues on even after the growth factor Is gone. In-vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that PDGF is a broad acting growth factor with mitogenic (cell proliferation) and chemotactic (cell recruitment) effects on osteoblasts, cementoblasts and periodontal ligament cells. In fact, the PDGF contained in GEM 21S® significantly increases the proliferation and migration of osteoblasts and other cells of the periodontium.
Infuse - INFUSE Bone Graft is recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) applied to an absorbable collagen sponge carrier. The purpose of the protein, which occurs naturally in the body, is to stimulate bone formation. It has been previously approved by the FDA for use in certain lumbar spine fusion and tibial fracture repair procedures. Implanted into a bone-deficient site, INFUSE Bone Graft works with the body’s own biology to induce normal bone formation. The primary advantages of INFUSE® Bone Graft is that it eliminates the need to perform a second surgery to harvest bone from another location in your body. By eliminating this second site, the patient is exposed to less anesthesia, and will not have the potential complications such as pain, numbness and swelling from the area of the second surgery.
